The Making Of

I started out by getting some 'inspiration' to work on this assignment. I had been thinking deeply about Star Wars ep 2 and 3's scenes that had cities in it. I looked around at matte paintings, looking for composition. I wanted to make a sort of utopia that also has a dystopia feel. Like in Star Wars Coruscant looks amazing and perfect living style, but the viewers knew the secret about Chancellor Palpatine and the future of that city and Star Wars.

I thinking of making a 3D city with flying cars and with myself (green screened) in it. So starting out my scene I used a script to generate some buildings. The script was EdW_KludgeCity, i got from CreativeCrash. I generated a couple buildings but they seemed very similar and i built onto them. In my mind i had pictured a low angled shot with a hover car fly through with myself looking on.So I ventured to the Greenroom. I took a lot of video, with 3 I thought I could use.

I got my scene out but didn't realize it was a HUGE file and the computers I used would crash later on when I began to texture. So i simplified the models and rethought a scene. I decided to make a matte painting and dug out some floating object I made earlier in the year with the intention of using it as floating landmass to put my building on.

When I had finished remodeling my buildings I began to assemble the scene. I thought the sides looked naked so I added some smaller building and building built into the landmass.

Once I was happy with the composition, it was time to texture. With the textures and lighting i could make my utopia with a dystopia feel. I got plated metal textures, solid metal textures, tile textures and rock textures and placed them into my scene.

When I was happy with what I had I rendered out my shot ready to use for Photoshop. In Photoshop I added the windows and the greenery using colors with blurs fiddling with the opacity.

I decided that it was too dark and decided to finish my scene up by lighting it up a bit.
